Hurricane Preparation Tip Print E-mail
Wednesday, 28 July 2010 09:51

During this year’s Atlantic Hurricane Season (June 1-November 30), the Florida Division of Emergency Management urges homeowners to protect their property from strong winds, damaging rains, and flooding that hurricanes or tropical storms can bring to Florida.

Here are some examples of how to protect your property:

  • Learn the particular hurricane risks for your area.  Find out if your home is subject to storm surge or inland flooding.
  • Make a record of your personal property.  Keep an itemized list of your furniture, clothing and valuables to assist adjusters in case of a claim. Back it up with photographs or video.
  • Protect your insurance policies and other important documents in a secure place like a safe deposit box or a watertight box.
  • Keep trees and shrubbery around your home trimmed. Remove diseased or damaged tree limbs that could be blown down during a storm.
  • Clear clogged rain gutters. Hurricanes/tropical storms often bring heavy rain. Providing clear drainage will help prevent misdirected flooding.
  • Make sure storage sheds or other outbuildings are securely anchored, either to a permanent foundation or with straps and ground anchors.
  • Make temporary plywood covers to protect windows and sliding doors. Drill holes for screws or lag bolts in each cover and around each window. Use a numbering or lettering system that shows which cover goes with which window. Store the mounting screws or lag bolts with the covers in a place where they are readily accessible. Note: Taping of windows does not prevent them from breaking.
  • Make a list of outdoor items to bring inside in case of a storm, such as lawn furniture, trash barrels, hanging plants, toys and awnings. A list will help you more quickly identify anything that can be broken or picked up by strong winds and used as a missile.
  • Learn to safely shut off utilities, as well as where gas pilots and water mains are located.
  • Lock doors and windows to ensure that they are closed tight to help protect against strong winds and rain.
  • Buy Flood Insurance. Unlike damage from hurricane winds, water damage from coastal or inland flooding is not covered by homeowners insurance. Contact your local insurance agent or contact the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
The Store Room Self Storage also have trained personnel and developed action plan to protect and secure your contents in the event of a storm.  We hope that everyone have a safe season.

The Store Room Self Storage - Charity Event Print E-mail

Hi!  This is Jennifer Hastings, General Manager at The Store Room self storage in West Palm Beach.

I would like to share a little bit of information with our new, past and current self storage customers.  This year so far has been a rough year for all of us, especially those with special needs.  I teamed up with Muscular Dystrophy Association (Jerry's Kids) to help make a change and reach out to more people.  So far we have been successful in raising funds for children and adults that suffer from this disease.  As each year passes we think of things that can be done to help others as well as ourselves.  With each donation, it brings another level of help.  It can be as small as a flu shot or as big as a wheel chair or leg braces.  Each donation is also Tax Deductable.  So for everyone who would like to donate to the MDA please contact me at 561-659-2903 or you can email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The Store Room self storage is excited to help make a change in people's lives and we hope you are too!

***UPDATE 11 / 2 / 2009***

Thank everyone for making a difference and donating to MDA. It was a successful event however we did not meet our $100,000 goal but we did collect $89,823. We are still collecting donations if anyone would like to open their hearts to help find a cure for Muscular Dystrophy. All donations stay local to help children and adults in our area with MD. We all look forward to the day when cures are found and there is no need to collect any longer. Until then, we count on kindness and generosity of wonderful people in our communities like you. Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts.

P.S. The W.P.B. police actually came and arrested me it was great fun for a great cause.

 Jennifer Hastings, G.M.
